WE ARE GROWING! $7 MILLION DOLLAR ART CENTER OPEN IN ROCKVILLE TOWN CENTER What was a huge construction project in Downtown Rockville is now a destination for all art lovers. Located in the heart of this new urban mixed-use neighborhood (business-cultural-residential) is our new art center- Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts [VisArts], formerly known as Rockville Arts Place. Since 1987, Rockville Arts Place has served the community with gallery exhibitions, arts education, outreach to schools and communities, and as a home to many professional and emerging artists. As our organization grew, and our programs expanded, it was only a matter of time before we knew that we would need new space. When the City of Rockville decided to tear down and rebuild the Town Center and asked us to collaborate with them in building a state-of-the-art Visual Arts Center, we seized the opportunity!! So began our journey towards a new art center and a new name. The new space occupies three levels and will soon feature a contemporary craft shop on the street and shopping level. The second floor houses three galleries: a Main Exhibition Gallery, a Community Exhibition Gallery, and a Children’s Hands-On Discovery Gallery. The second floor also houses the artist’s studios, the artists shop, and a special event room with table seating for 200. The third floor houses classrooms for adults and children, including a ceramics studio, a glass studio, a wood studio, a digital animation lab and much more. VisArts is the place for young and old to meet and visit, explore their creative talents and view and purchase exceptional pieces of art and craft. The new arts center opened its doors to the public in the Fall of 2007. The Board of Directors, Staff and Faculty of the Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts[VisArts] welcomes visitors, patrons, artists and students from the entire metropolitan region.
In February of 2004 we launched a Capital Campaign to raise $3,500,000 to outfit and furnish this 28,000 square foot Visual Arts Center. To date we have raised $1,100,000, of which $200,000 is from the State of Maryland and $900,000 from individual donors. Every gift is important. Every dollar makes a difference. We are asking everyone in the community to help. You can access the pledge form by clicking here. |
