This entry level glass fusing course introduces students to the concepts of coefficient of expansion (COE), temperature, volume control and firing schedules. Use cutting tools, a variety of glass, molds and kilns to create art from fused glass. Discussions include project layout, choosing materials, design and color. Student projects will culminate with the creation of an 8”x8” dish. Each student will leave class with skills and knowledge to begin fusing on their own. No previous glass experience required. The advent of digital photography has created new opportunities to capture and process infrared images. Use a camera (DSLR or point and shoot) converted to infrared, or by using special filters to create that magical infrared “look”. Consider shooting digital infrared using special filters instead of converting a camera. Study exposure, focusing, auto white balance, pre-visualization, and “ideal” infrared subjects. Images will be processed in Photoshop CS3 or Lightroom. Students should have photography experience and a basic understanding of Photoshop selections, adjustment layers and curves.

This advanced level course approaches the architecture and anatomy of the figure, utilizing concepts and techniques of the classical Masters. Work from reproductions of Master drawings and live models to analyze the structural and geometrical aspects of the body. “Form Drawing” concepts will be used, allowing students to see and draw in a more 3D manner. Skills learned here will provide an essential foundation for expression. Using charcoal pencils, tonal-hatching techniques will be introduced to describe shape and anatomy. Study anatomy, proportion and contours, and learn to take measurements and angles. Use bone alignments as a guide, focus on relationships between the ribcage and pelvis. Painting Porcelain

This one day workshop and follow up critique will allow students to make beautiful painted tiles in a short amount of time. Paint glazes on ceramic tile with techniques that are transferrable to other surfaces. Tiles are fired overnight and a critique follows the next day when work is picked up. Students leave with at least two beautiful tiles ready for display.

Maiolica glaze painting is a genre of ceramics consisting of a low fire clay body glazed with an opaque tin-based white glaze and then painted with brightly colored metallic oxides and stains. Students in this one day workshop will explore traditional and contemporary approaches to pattern generation and painting methods using commercial tiles for painting. All materials and firing included.

Students with clay experience may desire additional time in the ceramics studio to pursue independent projects. With the purchase of an open studio pass, students receive 25lbs of clay, use of all studio glazes and tools, and enough bisque and glaze firing passes to accompany the clay. Subsequent passes must be purchased to use the open studio when clay supply runs out. No outside materials permitted.

Decorative Box Construction

This class introduces the student to the joinery techniques necessary in constructing a beautiful decorative wooden box. Construct a box from curly maple and figured veneer. The box will be held together using double dado joints cut on the router table. The top incorporates frame and panel construction and pivots on a concealed hinge. The basics of veneer application and sanding will be covered and each student will complete their work with a hand rubbed oil finish.
